2s Saturdays woes continue

Last Saturday saw the 2nd XI play Poloc at Torrance House hoping to register their first win of the season.

After winning the toss Poloc batted first and made a steady start before three quick wickets from Guarav Rajmohan, Steven Mann and Shahid Mahmood had them on 89-3 and the game well poised. The Poloc batters then batted very steadily during the middle overs gradually building a partnership despite some confident EK appeals. They reached 167-3 off 37 overs so at this point EK were still well in the game. Unfortunately for the home side this all changed after Mahmood and Mann left the attack and the Poloc batsman decided to up the rate. And they did so significantly scoring 109 off the next 9 overs to reach 267-3. Zakir reached his 100 in fine style but Syed couldn’t quite repeat the feat being out LBW to Mann for 87 in what turned out to be the last ball of the innings as the rain came down and the innings had to be aborted with 20 balls still remaining. Final score 277-4 off 46.2.

EK’s Duckworth-Lewis target was 297 off 46 overs which was always going to be too tough a challenge.

The dependable Alan Meikle made a good effort in the reply with 51 taking particular advantage of the short pitched bowling but unfortunately for EK wickets regularly fell at the other end. Some late hitting by Guarav and Harris Mahmood took the score to 111-7. Then the rain returned and as it became heavier the captains shaked hands to end the game.

EK were 88 runs short on the Duckworth-Lewis at that point giving Poloc a comfortable victory.

Some encouraging signs in the field for EK until the late carnage but ultimately it meant that EK 2s have now lost all 5 of their Saturday fixtures with just a solitary point to show for their efforts.
