EK 2s entertained West of Scotland 2s at Torrance House on Saturday. West were unbeaten for the season and had already won the league so this was a chance for Torrance House to pull off a big shock to finish the season.
Unfortunately the home side wouldn’t come close to achieving this shock. A clue as to how this match would pan out occurred over an hour before the start as the Partick side were all on the Torrance House outfield performing impressive fielding drills while some of the home side were still in their beds sleeping! (Sadly this isn’t a joke)
Skipper Mann won the toss and opted to try and exploit the early damp conditions by putting Partick into bat. Things didn’t go to plan though and an early sign of what was to come came in the first over when Mills drove a full ball from Mann beautifully down the ground for four and he continued where he started throughout the innings batting very well for 129 before eventually being caught by Liam Flynn at midwicket off the last ball of Shahid Mahmood’s spell.
He wasn’t the only Partick centurion as Hussain also brought up three figures in the last over to finish on 105 not out.
Unfortunately this was a day when the catches didn’t stick as at least six chances went down and this combined with plenty of big hits over the boundary helped Partick to a formidable total of 335-5 off their 50 overs.
EK’s chase started badly when Gregor was caught by a sharp catch from bowler Brown and the innings stuttered along after that with regular wickets falling as the home side limped along to 80 all out against an impressive Partick attack who finished the season with 15 wins from 15 games.
So the end of a challenging season for the 2s who now drop into Division two for the 2019 season. The last three seasons have seen the team relegated, promoted, relegated. Will the trend continue next year?
